Work parties

It's that time of the year where companies hold their end of year parties.

It's a bit of a strange thing to have a party with your colleagues and managers. Yes it's nice to meet the people outside of the workplace and talk about other things but work. But in the back of your mind you still remember that your boss is here and you better not make a fool of yourself.

Personally, I find these things as awkward as family weddings. Unlike going partying with your friends, those events you tend to have to conform to either boss or parents expectations of good behaviour.

The other thing is, food. I'd much rather go for a meal with a few colleagues, than with a large group where you get the choice between two items. And God help you if you have a dietary requirement. You get to feel really left out. Not the company's organisers fault, but the hotel/catering crew's.

Tonight was my work party. while the atmosphere was good, and the people are nice, I'm not sure I want to repeat the experience. Mostly because of the food. Turkey and Ham is ok, but when you get the lactose free version, that means you just get the meat and the gravy. No potatoes, no stuffing, just the odd carrot, parsnip if you're lucky and they didn't drown them under butter.

I had a nice time otherwise, some bit of fun, the conversations were rendered difficult by the music's volume, but still, I had a bit of fun. I let my hair down, danced a bit, laughed, met a few new people. But I got home, hungry...
